Experience knifemaking

Owning a knife by Prime Artisan Knives is pretty special, but imagine owning one that you helped to make!

Each year AJ offers a limited number of opportunities to spend a single day working alongside him in his workshop to forge and heat treat a blade for your very own knife.

COST: $1000

A client forging their blade

What to expect on the day.

We will focus on three major processes:

  • Forging the blade from high carbon steel, using a hammer and anvil.

  • Grinding the profile of the blade using a specialised grinder.

  • Heat treatment. This is the most important stage of making a knife. A baptism of fire, this is where we transform the steel to it’s hardest phase, imbuing it with the qualities it requires in order to be a usable tool.

We will finish up your knifemaking experience with a sharpening lesson, so you can keep your new knife in top condition.

Over the following days AJ will complete the knife to Prime Artisan Knives standards, ready for you to take delivery.

You can expect to receive the completed knife within a week.

What type of knife will we make?

You’ll get the most enjoyment from a knife you can use regularly, so we will make either a kitchen knife, or a utility/hunting knife.

Whatever we make, rest assured it will be beautiful and fully functional.

We will be using a simple carbon steel for the blade and wood for the handle.

A bespoke leather sheath for utility/hunters can be for an additional cost.

Please note that I won't do carved handles or blade engraving.
